COATING WITH NANO
AND CERAMIC COATINGS

Coating with nano coatings

What are and how do we protect surfaces with nano coatings?

Nano coatings are an invisible and very strong means of protecting various types of surfaces. Nano coatings form an inseparable bond with the substrate and can only be removed mechanically afterwards. Instead of remaining on the surface, they penetrate deeply into the treated surface and bond with the structure. This creates an invisible barrier that prevents other (liquid) substances from penetrating and/or adhering to the surface.

What is a nanometre?

Nano is a unit of measurement; a nanometre is one billionth of a metre, a dimension just slightly larger than that of atoms. Coating with nanotechnology means that a super-thin, practically invisible, protective coating layer can be applied. The name ‘nano coating’ mainly denotes the particle size of the coating, but not so much the composition of the material itself.

Nano coatings – they are all around us – are part of our daily lives. For many industries, they have become completely indispensable. Nowadays, it is hard to think of an industry in which nano coatings or nano liquids do not play an important role.

What are the benefits of coating with nano coatings?

The benefits of are numerous. Objects coated with these coatings are dirt-, grease- and water-resistant. In practice, it means that cleaning becomes a simple and quick task because all types of deposits and dirt slide off the surface. In addition to saving time in cleaning, significant cost savings are therefore realised.

Besides dirt, atmospheric deposits and all types of grease, nano coatings also prevent mould and bacteria from adhering to the surface. Porous objects are protected from decay by nano coatings and their lifespan is extended.

Benefits of protecting objects with nano coatings

Protecting objects with nano coatings has many advantages:

  Scratch and abrasion resistance
  Good chemical resistance
  Cost-reducing
  Durable
Reduces the use of cleaning agents, thus environmentally friendly and cost-saving
  Easy to clean *
  Self-cleaning *
  Simple application
  Invisible
  Ultra-thin
  Hydrophobic and oleophobic
Protects the colours of the substrate from UV exposure

*It is important to note that ‘self-cleaning’ and ‘easy-to-clean’ are not the same thing. Surfaces labelled as ‘easy-to-clean’ are surfaces with dirt- and water-repellent properties that make them easier to clean. Periodic cleaning is therefore still necessary, but less frequently and with less intensive cleaning agents. Self-cleaning surfaces, on the other hand, stay clean due to an active action of the coating. With this type of coating, the dirt is broken down by the influence of sunlight and is washed away at the first rain shower.

Common applications of nano coatings

The applications are virtually unlimited. Coating objects with nano coatings not only extends the life of objects but also ensures a radiant, value-increasing and flawless appearance.

Possible coating contexts:

  Automotive
  Anti-graffiti
  Shop displays
  Bridges, buildings and viaducts
  Facility applications
  Glass/windows
  Wood
  Interior objects and spaces
  Plastic
  Marine objects
  Boats and water vehicles
  Stone
  Textiles
  Roof tiles
  Food processing industry
  Solar panels

The highly advanced protective nano coatings can penetrate and seal into the smallest pores of the substrate due to their ultra-small particles. The adhesion of dirt, moisture, greases, chemicals is thus made impossible.

Application of coatings

A careful process of choosing the right product and application method precedes the application of nano coatings. Decisive factors include the type of surface to which the nano coatings will be applied and the type of application involved. The condition of the surface is also important.

It is recommended to use professional advice in the preparatory phase. Mavro’s specialists are happy to provide tailor-made and well-founded advice on both application preparations and selecting the right product.

What factors are important?

  Condition of the surface
  Material of the surface
  Degree of durability
Which cleaning agents are used to clean the treated object/surface?
Load on the surface to be treated

Applying the chosen nano coating is a relatively simple task, of course highly dependent on the material of the surface. The surface should always be properly cleaned, dry, rust and grease-free. Any damage should be repaired before treatment. Weather conditions and humidity play a major role during application, processing conditions differ for each coating. For the right choice, consulting a specialist is recommended.

Maintenance of treated objects after application of nano coatings

Maintenance of coated surfaces is considerably easier, faster and cheaper. Due to the special repellent properties of nano coatings, dirt can no longer adhere to the treated surface. This ensures that:

You save on cleaning products because no/less chemistry is needed for the desired result.
You save on the frequency of cleaning because the treated surface stays clean longer. So less frequent cleaning!

In short, nano coatings pay for themselves!

Removal of nano coatings

Surfaces coated with nano coatings are extremely durable and long-lasting. However, if there is a reason to remove a nano coating, for example if the product has been applied incorrectly, it is not always easy. Nano coatings are extremely durable, but like all types of coatings, over time the thin coating will disappear through ‘wear and tear’.

Removing a nano-coating varies depending on the substrate and type of product.

Ceramic coatings

What are ceramic coatings?

Ceramic coatings, also known as SiC compound, are a silicon carbide compound. In practice, ceramic coatings adhere very well to the surface without the presence of resins and have excellent resistance to acid and alkaline stresses. Ceramic coatings have similar properties to glass, which is why they are also called glass coatings or liquid glass. The ultra-thin, transparent layer makes the substrate extremely chemically resistant and resistant to corrosion.

Anti graffiti ceramic coatings

Do you want to get ahead of graffiti vandals and preventively protect your objects against graffiti? Ceradur® Anti Graffiti is extremely hydro- and oleophobic, making the adhesion of graffiti, ink, aerosol paint and glue virtually impossible. Removing any soiling is also quick and easy. Ceradur® Anti Graffiti ceramic coating is resistant to strong chemicals and is unaffected by graffiti removers and cleaning agents. The coating is ultra-thin, colour-recovering, easy-to-clean and suitable for application on virtually any smooth and sealed surface.

Ceramic coatings for protecting metal

Specially designed for application on metals is Ceradur® Metal. Due to its special properties, the coating provides protection against soiling, erosion, corrosion and moisture for at least 3 years, depending on the condition of the object before treatment. Ceradur® Metal is applicable to almost all ferrous and non-ferrous metals such as steel, aluminium, stainless steel, brass, copper, gold and bronze. Substrates treated with Ceradur® Metal can obtain a food safety certificate after external testing.
