What do we mean by floor preservation?
Floor preservation is basically the application of floor protection that reduces wear and tear, reduces cleaning maintenance, and makes floors last a lot longer.
Floor preservation is important for protecting the floor surface and can be divided into two types:
Floor coating Floor impregnation
Both forms of floor preservation serve the same purpose, which is to protect your floor from visible daily use marks, damage and wear for as long as possible.
Intensive traffic on untreated floors causes rapid wear and tear on the surface. A cement-bound floor, in particular will wear out and get dirty quickly. Also, the wear of untreated floors creates a lot of dust. In a warehouse or production facility, this dust is both harmful to the health of staff and bad for the equipment and materials present.
It therefore has great advantages to protect new cement-bound floors with a protective layer of finishing material. For this, you can choose from many different options with various advantages and some disadvantages.
Protecting your floor with a floor coating
A floor coating is an extremely thin, seamlessly applied protective layer that lies, as it were, on top of the existing floor. Usually the floor coating is only a fraction of a millimetre thick. It seals the floor completely seamlessly and impermeably. Applying a floor coating gives floors a clean, fresh and new look and makes them resistant to chemical and mechanical stresses. It is used in environments such as warehouses, car parks, DIY stores, laboratories and shops.
Durable floor coatings provide long-lasting floor protection, are highly resistant to the use of most disinfectants and completely seal the floor surface.
Floor coatings can be basically classified into three different types:
Epoxy floor coatings Polyurethane floor coatings Acrylic (PMMA) floor coatings
Several products have been developed in Mavro’s laboratory for effective floor finishing, including the Mavrox® product line. These products provide a strong, safe and clean floor finish that also protects against heavy loads. The use of Mavrox® products changes the appearance of the floors it is applied to because it leaves a dense and coloured layer.
Concrete floor impregnation
Floor impregnation basically involves treating mineral floors. Such as floors of all types of natural stone, but also artificial stone such as concrete and bricks.
Impregnation creates a protective layer that provides long-term and highly efficient protection against dirt. Unlike a floor coating that completely seals the substrate, impregnation does not seal the substrate. One advantage of this is that the substrate retains its natural appearance despite the protective layer.
The choice to impregnate mineral floors or concrete floors can have various motivations. For example, to make the floor more wear-resistant and/or water, oil and dirt repellent. Here are some examples where concrete floor impregnation can be the solution:
Concrete floors and cast asphalt in industrial environments with heavy and stressful traffic such as forklifts and/or indoor unloading trucks. These create extremely heavy loads and loose dust due to wear and tear.
Mineral floors and substrates (including tiles, natural stones, concrete and various types of pavements) can be damaged by repeated or prolonged exposure to moisture. This can cause dangerous situations. Moreover, a long-term moist environment creates favourable conditions for the development of green deposits and other contaminants.
A floor can become slippery and a hazard due to grease and oil, both in public and private situations. In addition, grease and oil have the property of leaving a dark, very hard-to-remove stain on porous substrates.
Impregnating a floor with a dust binder
There are several ways to impregnate a floor, but one of the most common methods is to use a dust binder such as our Floorguard Mineral. After application, this product soaks into the substrate and starts a chemical reaction.
It creates hard crystals that fill the pores of the concrete surface. The result is a hard and dense top layer that is more resistant to wear and tear. Sealing the surface also makes the floor resistant to penetration of moisture and dirt.
