RUST REMOVAL
The most common form of rust is the familiar reddish-brown coating that forms on iron and steel. Rust is the general name for iron oxide. So rust is specifically the name of oxidation on iron or iron alloys, such as steel. Other forms of oxidation include the black coating on silver, and the green coating on copper. Removing rust and fly rust effectively? We make chemistry work!
The familiar reddish-brown rust forms when iron comes into contact with water and oxygen. Despite the fact that air contains about 21% oxygen, iron will not simply rust when exposed to dry air. Rusting occurs when in contact with moist air or in water. A relative humidity above 50% is sufficient for rusting and above 80% rust will form significantly faster.
Dissolved electrolytes in water accelerate the oxidation reaction, this explains why iron rusts faster in salt water than in pure water. Acid will also accelerate the reaction exponentially.
How do I remove rust?
Rust is the result of an oxidation reaction, namely the reaction between iron, water and oxygen:
Iron + water + oxygen à Hydrated iron (III) oxide
The reaction product: Hydrated iron (III) oxide, will form crystals with the typical reddish-brown color of rust. This form of oxidation is brittle, weak and fragile and is therefore not desirable on iron. In addition, a rusting surface will continue to rust.
Stainless steel contains chromium, which can oxidize just like iron. Unlike rust, which is weak and brittle, chromium forms a strong oxide which forms an invisible protective layer on the steel.
Removing rust can be done in several ways. One option is to sand rust off the substrate. But after sanding, the underlying iron will rust again.
The best way to remove rust is with chemicals. Removing rust is done with acids. Chemical rust removal is best done with phosphoric acid. Phosphoric acid reacts with iron (III) oxide to form iron (III) phosphate. The iron (III) phosphate is then easily wiped away.
In our lab, we have developed a special cleaner for rust removal. Our Rustremover is based on phosphoric acid and corrosion retardants. It effectively removes rust while leaving a protective phosphate layer on the surface. This phosphate layer provides temporary protection against rust and is also paintable. When the phosphate layer is painted over, it will act as a primer layer to provide long-term rust protection to the underlying metal and improve adhesion.
Did you know that: cola contains a reasonable amount of phosphoric acid and can therefore be used for mild rust spots. Coke also has a particularly low pH of around 2.7.
