Removal of green deposits

Green deposit

Green deposits can develop when a surface remains damp for a long time. Lack of direct sunlight also causes the surface to remain moist and green deposits to grow. Green deposits can occur on almost any surface. Common substrates on which green attack occurs are tiles, wood (fences), clinkers, bricks, concrete tiles, natural stone and roof tiles. Some soft surfaces are also sensitive to green deposits, such as convertible tops, parasol cloth and awnings. Effectively remove green deposits with Mavro products.

It is not unexpected that these problems often occur after winter. In winter it is almost always wet, the sun is lower and the power of the sun is considerably less.

What is green deposits? Green deposits consist of a collection of algae and (lichen) mosses. The green-colored appearance is because these organisms contain chlorophyll (also known as chlorophyll). Like plants and trees, these organisms generate energy/oxygen through photosynthesis.

Properties and effect

Prevent and resolve

It is especially important to address the problem of green deposits at the source, namely the algae. Removing the algae will prevent and (crusted) mosses from growing, and damaging the substrate. The mosses are also more difficult to remove.

There are several means of removing and/or remedying green deposits. Not every way is effective and may even backfire.

A common do-it-yourself remedy is a mixture of water and baking soda or a mixture of water and vinegar. These remedies are obviously easy and inexpensive, but will not be effective in the long run.

There are also mechanical cleaning methods, such as the high-pressure sprayer. A high-pressure sprayer will remove algae and mosses in many cases. However, the high pressure will make the substrate rough and porous. This actually makes the substrate an ideal environment for algae, so they will come back faster and more persistently.

Then there are the professional algae removers. These chemical mixtures are often based on didecyldiamonnium chloride (a quarternary ammonium salt) and surfactants, such as Mavro Algae Remover. These products are guaranteed to effectively remove algae and provide long-term protection against new algae growth.

Eventually, even after using Mavro Algae Remover the green deposits will return. Fortunately, there is a solution for this! An excellent way to prevent green deposits is to impregnate the facade. An impregnating agent such as Mavroseal WB and Floorguard will make tiles, concrete, masonry and other substrates water-repellent for a long time (>5 years). Therefore, even during the wet and cold months of the year, an impregnated facade will simply stay dry, preventing algae from having a chance to grow.

Getting Started with Algae Remover

Chemical removers such as Algae Remover is what is described as a pesticide with a very specific application and (legal) use requirement.

The product, because this is a pesticide, must have an authorization number from the CTGB (College Toelating Gewasbeschermingsmiddelen en Bactericiden) and, because the product contains tensides, it must comply with the regulations on surface active substances (tensides decree EC 648/2004).

Instructions for use

Remove loose materials and contaminants such as leaves and sand, etc.

Make a diluted solution of 1 in 10 to 1 in 40 and apply with a low pressure sprayer. Allow the agent to act on the substrate for 24-48 hours. The action is strengthened and accelerated by sunlight. For protective and preventive action, Mavro Algae Remover can remain on the substrate after treatment, without rinsing with water.

Legal instructions for use

The use is permitted exclusively as an agent for the control of green deposits. Treating paved surfaces and equipment next to watercourses when controlling green manure is not permitted. This agent is toxic to fish and other aquatic organisms. Prevent the liquid from reaching the surface water.

Safety regulations

Wear appropriate protective clothing, gloves and face shield.  Avoid contact with eyes and skin. In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek expert medical advice. After contact with skin, wash with soap and water. If swallowed, drink water or milk, do not induce vomiting, seek expert medical advice.
