Removing graffiti is a challenging job that requires specialist knowledge. For optimal results, it is essential to match the right cleaning agents to the type of graffiti and the surface. The point is to remove the graffiti without damaging or affecting the surface of the object in question.
Often, a vague outline of the applied graffiti remains visible after cleaning. This partially still visible graffiti is called a graffiti shadow. A graffiti shadow is not a form of graffiti, but more a side effect and remnant of it.
When graffities are applied, depending partly on the paint used and the substrate on which it is applied, the pigments will soak into the substrate and adhere there. These persistent shadows can generally be removed with graffiti shadow removers.
Graffiti has been removed but the shadow persists
It is undoubtedly a source of frustration when a shadow remains after removing the graffiti. A graffiti shadow is generally caused by the deep penetration of the applied agent into the (porous) substrate. After removing the graffiti, in most cases a shadow, a silhouette of the applied painting or text will still be visible.
A follow-up step to completely clean the surface is almost unavoidable. It is possible that the graffiti shadow will already disappear completely after the second treatment with a graffiti remover.
Remaining graffiti shadows can have several causes:
The rough surfaces have not been sufficiently cleaned. The texture of mineral substrates allows the paint used to soak deep into pores, crevices or uneven parts of the surface. The substrate has not been pre-treated with anti-graffiti systems. Cleaning agents that evaporate quickly have been used Exposure time to the cleaning agent too short
The temperature of the surface affects the result of graffiti shadow removal
The result of the cleaning work is influenced, among other things, by the temperature of the surface. With extremely cold surfaces or with outdoor temperatures below zero, a considerably longer soaking time of the applied cleaning agent must be considered.
When the graffiti is applied with a permanent marker, the probability of leaving a graffiti shadow is very high. Permanent markers use permanent dyes which make the top surface relatively easy to clean, but the microscopic dye particles dissolved in solvent penetrate deep into the surface and leave a shadow.
Graffiti shadow removal must be done with the right products
Graffiti shadows are very persistent. To achieve good results during the cleaning process, using only a graffiti remover is not enough. The cleaning product must penetrate deep into the porous surface to work quickly and effectively.
